Sermon Preached on Sunday, December 3, 2006 at Church of the Transfiguration Propers - Advent 1, Year C Department stores, radio and television stations, and the fresh-fallen snow are all reminders that Christmas is upon us. Caribou Coffee is once again serving Fa-la-lattes, Starbucks has pulled out its Cranberry Bliss Bars , and our downtown streets sparkle with lights and decorations on windows and trees. I used to think Advent was just a handy way to countdown the days to Christmas. One year, my Sunday School class made paper chains out of red and green construction paper loops. Six Days Later. . . Listen!

Last Sunday after the Epiphany Matthew 17:1-9 “. . . Six days later” our Gospel reading begins. With a lead like that it’s worth taking a look at what happened six days prior. Sermon Preached at St. Mary's Episcopal Church Stone Harbor, NJ Proper 21A (September 28, 2008) I never knew my great-grandmother Bertha because she died when I was an infant, but I do know she made the best shortcake biscuits in the world. I know this because she passed the recipe down to my grandmother who passed it down to my mother who passed it down to me. And, not wanting you to feel left out, I’m going to pass it along to you: baking soda, baking powder, flour, buttermilk, and butter. Can you smell it? Can you taste the flaky biscuits? Of course not! Reading a recipe – even holding up the ingredients – is not the same as actually preparing the dough and baking the biscuits and passing them around to be shared.
